About Manchester Magic and Mystics
Manchester Magic and Mystics (Greater Manchester Community Basketball) was founded in 1997. Our first home was at Trafford Basketball Centre in Sale, where we had access to a double court at Manor Avenue.
From the very beginning, we entered National League competition at U16 and U18 Boys level. As our development programme grew, we quickly expanded to include boys’ teams at U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18. The Club also launched a girls’ programme, initially with players from local schools at U16 level.
Building a Home in Manchester
From the outset, our ambition was to bring the Club into the heart of Manchester. In 2002, this became a reality when we opened the Manchester Basketball Centre in Whalley Range.
The project was made possible thanks to:
- A major government grant,
- And the ongoing commitment of Manchester City Council, without whose backing our success would not have been possible.
Success on and off the court
Since the Club was formed, the Club has enjoyed unparalleled success in English basketball, winning numerous National titles, producing England and GB internationals, and helping over 50 players secure scholarships to the prestigious US college system.
For the 2025/26 season, the Club has:
- 11 girls’ teams and 11 boys’ teams competing in National and Regional Basketball Leagues, from U12 to Senior level, more than any other Club in the UK.
- A thriving Academy programme (16–19 years) for boys and girls, competing in the EABL and WEABL, featuring some of the best junior talent in the country. Players are drawn mainly from Greater Manchester, but also from across the UK, including as far afield as Aberdeen and London. The Academy prepares players for the next step, whether that be university in the UK or the USA.
Basketball for the whole community
While elite performance is a key part of what we do, the Manchester Basketball Centre was always built for the whole community.
Alongside our National League and Academy programmes, we run accessible community basketball sessions for all ages and abilities, with a special focus on younger players. These sessions are delivered by excellent coaches, are consistently well-attended, and are kept as affordable as possible to ensure opportunities for everyone.
